About Us

A Caribbean Band for all occasions, Caribe can customize the perfect Live Soundtrack for your event! Blending lively instrumental arrangements featuring Caribbean Steel Pans and crowd-pleasing vocal songs, Caribe Steel Band will warm your soul and lift your spirits with the sounds of the Caribbean: reggae, calypso, soca, samba and even your favorite pop tunes – with an island twist!

For a formal cocktail hour, elegant dinner or casual backyard party, Caribe will create a soothing ambiance for you and your guests. Our most popular and versatile ensemble, the trio, is made up of steel drum, guitar and percussion. For larger events, you might prefer the lively sounds of a 4, 5 or 6 piece band complete with up to three steel drummers, or perhaps your event requires simply a solo steel drummer. Whatever the event, Caribe is the solution.

Leader and founder of Caribe, Angie Tabor began playing Tenor steel pan aangie-winefest_framet CSU, Long Beach while earning a Bachelor of Music in Percussion Performance. Her passion for the sound of the steel pan and the music of the Caribbean was immediately ignited.

She carried this inspiration to the University of Northern Colorado where she earned a Master of Music in Percussion Performance. While in Colorado, she performed regularly with the only professional steel band in Denver (at the time), Pan Jumbies. With this group, she not only played Tenor pan, but also began learning Triple Guitar pans and Double Second pans. Soon after returning home to Southern California, Angie formed Caribe Steel Band.

Fast forward a few years and hundreds of gigs … In 2011, Angie purchased a set of Double Second pans hand made by Dave Beery at Smarty Pans Music. Ever since, she has enjoyed incorporating the warm timbre of these double seconds into gigs all over Southern California.

In addition to maintaining a busy performing schedule on steel pans, Angie performs regularly on drum set and other percussion instruments with a variety of ensembles that have taken her across the US and around the globe. She also maintains a studio of private students.

In the summer of 2016, Angie relocated to Port Townsend, Washington where she formed a brand new incarnation of Caribe Steel Band! Caribe of the Pacific Northwest has already been performing around Port Townsend, and their summer schedule is filling up fast. Angie teaches lessons on steel pans, drums and percussion, and performs with other groups on the Olympic Peninsula on drums and percussion with some of the wonderfully talented local musicians. Stay tuned, steel pan classes will soon be available in the Pacific Northwest!

John 01_frameBass, John Sanders    John has performed at festivals throughout the northwest.  Playing in a variety of combos he has had the opportunity to share the stage with several talented musicians.  NW Blues great John “Scooch” Cugno, Jazz Vibraphonist Rickey Kelly, Zimbabwe Maribimba player Linc Mkwananzi, just to name a few.  Currently, he performs with Caribe, and is the resident bassist for the Peninsula Community College Jazz Ensemble.  When he’s not performing John loves to snorkel in the Caribbean with his wife Heather and son Jediah.
